Note: Moloch ("King") was the sun god of the Canaanites (or were they Ammonites?) in old Palestine, sometimes associated with the Sumerian Baal, although Moloch was entirely malevolent. Moloch was represented as a huge bronze statue with the head of a bull. The statue was hollow, and inside there burned a fire which colored the Moloch a glowing red. Firstborn children were sacrificed to him by the Israelites in the Valley of Hinnom to renew the strength of the sun fire. This ritual was probably borrowed from surrounding nations, and was also popular in ancient Carthage and modern Long Beach, California.
In Ginzberg's poem, Moloch represents the false idol of consumerism. At soundchecks, Moloch represents both the false idol of consumerism and the sacrificial burning of unrequited confusion. You may observe Moloch lurking in the background of some of the pictures.
Another Note: Starting this month - larger, high-res pictures that capture not only the actions, but the thoughts of the participants!
Final Note: The little scraps of paper you see participants reading were individual lines from the poem, read at random throughout the afternoon.
